PHOTOGRAPHERS’ LOCATION NOTES

We located this scene in the wheat and sheep region northeast of Perth in Western Australia, Ben's wife has many relatives who farm in this part of the country and we were given the contact details by a cousin who farms a neighbouring property.

We saw this vehicle for the first time late one Spring afternoon in 1998, we were left speechless at what nature and a few stock could do to vehicle left sitting for a while. We had limited time and light, and fair journey back to Perth, already having had a busy day, so we had to work quickly to capture the moment.

This beautiful vehicle was originally owned by a commercial airline pilot who flew the long distance flights from Perth, Western Australia to Melbourne and Sydney on the eastern seaboard of Australia in the late 1930's. It was sold to a farming family in the eastern wheatbelt region of Western Australia just after the end of WWII.

At first it was used by the farmers as their family town car, later as it tired, it had its boot cut out and a flat platform made, from then on being used for general farm work; carting hay, 44 gallon drums, feed and sick stock.

Then an advantage was noted with its unusual hydraulic suspension, a feature that gave a very stable ride, even over the roughest of ground, it was given over to being used for spot-light fox hunting until a rock took out the sump and gearbox in 1955. Deciding that it was too hard to repair the Old Chev, its fox hunting days over, it was parked under a tree next to the farmhouse and left to the vagaries of the weather and stock.

In 1962 it was sold to the young son of a neighbouring farmer for the sum of 25 pounds ($50) about a fortnights wages on the day. Being his first vehicle and learning the skills of a bush mechanic he got it running as his farm runabout, the erratic 6 volt electrics and perennial cooling system failures finally ended its days as a reliable vehicle.

Following the tradition of generations of farmers - never throw anything away - you might need it some day. In 1965 it was driven into the Old Farm Stables, put on blocks, to share the intervening years with the house cow, farm horses and chickens who lived in the pens adjoining the stables. Maybe to be fixed and put back on the road - one day!
