PHOTOGRAPHERS’ LOCATION NOTES

This scene was shot in the front lounge room of a small cottage located in the northern reaches of the historic wine-growing region of the Swan Valley in Western Australia.

With only 4 rooms this cottage housed a family of 8 people, built of light stud framing, clad at the front with rough sawn weatherboards with the side walls and roof clad in corrugated iron.

No ceilings to save on construction costs, the rooms are tiny, barely 9 x 9 feet square, timber floors with the internal walls clad with corrugated iron. The scale of the room is reflected in the choice of very small and compact furnishings - the Teddy is not that big.

The house would have been baking in summer and freezing in winter.

As is often the case with farming folk, furniture and possessions are just left, when a new homestead is built or changing fortunes move people on.

Today it sits abandoned and unused - frozen in time - but not forgotten the current owner living in a modern home located close by, keeping a weather eye on the building, hoping one day to make it into a small museum, with all of it contents, to illustrate how people lived in a simpler age.
