Sarge & his wife passed this VW Baja Bug most mornings on their morning walk in the bush land near their home in the Darling range of Western Australia. He kept saying to his wife that he must photograph this car some day.
Ben & Sarge did a location check and worked out that the best time of year for the angle of the sun, would be an April sunset. It took them about four afternoons to get this shot at sunset, as there was only a 10 to 15 minute ‘magic window’, to get the perfect light before it got dark and sometimes there was cloud cover which would not give them the nice shafts of light they were looking for.
The Beetle is covered with psychedelic designs which is reminiscent of VW’s hippy following in the 60s. Sarge & Ben weren’t suggesting that the mud guards and bumper bars were chopped with the axe, it just so happened that the car was parked on the wood heap, and the axe happened to be laying on the ground so it became an an excellent prop.
