PHOTOGRAPHERS’ LOCATION NOTES

I contacted my friend Levon in December 2001 to organise an iron candelabra for my wife Maddie’s birthday. Levon is an iron sculptor whom I have known for about five years. We went up for supper as a family and Levon showed us around his workshops and spoke of his plans for the future. He was in the middle of selling his property up at Rolling Green and moving down to Midland (Western Australia.)

He asked me if we could photograph his original forge in a sensitive manner, before he dismantled it. Ben and I went up after work in mid January to shoot the above scene. Levon is descended from a long line of blacksmith sculptors in Ethiopia. He produced ironwork for Haile Selassie and eventually migrated to Australia.

Ben and I were very pleased with the image, it has a distinctive mediaeval quality, befitting the long tradition of Levon's artisan forefathers.
