PHOTOGRAPHERS LOCATION NOTES

Photographed in March 2001 at the Midland railway workshops, Midland Western Australia. After the gold boom in Kalgoorlie in the 1890’s, the Western Australian government expanded the railway network throughout the state and a workshops was built in Midland which was opened in 1904.

The work force of 2000 to 3500 skilled tradesmen who worked in the workshops built and maintained steam engines until its closure in1994.

The powerhouse contained the latest technology of the time & was in a substantial double brick building with beautiful Jarrah lined ceilings. It supplied electricity to the railway workshops and to the small town of Midland.
